THE SCOUT
United States, 2025: 91 minutes: Alberta Premiere
description
Over the course of one day, a location scout connects with a handful of New York City residents as she struggles to lock down shooting locations for a TV show.
Sofia works as a location scout for a TV show pilot shooting in New York City. In the 24-hour window in the lead-up of the show beginning its principal photography, Sofia is under pressure to find and lock down shooting locations. Over the course of a day, she struggles to find her footing in a mess of contradictions and the endless momentum of her unusual job. As the show’s sole scout, she’s often alone during her workdays—exploring and documenting the streets, businesses, and residences of the city. Throughout the day, she asks to enter the private space of a handful of the city’s residents and in doing so, steps into the fabric of their lives: a nostalgic elderly woman who lives alone, a well-off software developer and new father with too much time on his hands, an old distanced college friend, and so on. THE SCOUT unfolds as an anthology of these threaded meetings, depicting a woman struggling to find an equilibrium both in her relationships with people, her environing world, and herself.
